The Burj Dubai is the central part of the development known as Downtown Burj Dubai, a complex of 2 square kilometers beside Sheikh Zayed Avenue, which crosses the city in a cross.
On July 21, 2007, the sponsoring company Emaar Properties announced that Burj Dubai had then surpassed the previous record held until then height of the skyscraper Taipei 101, becoming the tallest building in the world. This record did not become official until January 4, 2010, as the body responsible for measuring the height of the buildings, the Council on Tall Buildings and Human Habitat, did not recognize the final height of the building until completion of the works.
